Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello Doctor,I had unprotected sex on the 13th day (yesterday) after my period. Can you please advice me the pill to take in order to avoid getting pregnant. I have a 16 months old baby and we are not yet ready to have another baby now. I am still breastfeeding too.
Since it is barely 24 hours after your unprotected sexual intercourse, you may take post-coital (next morning) pill to avoid the pregnancy. These pills if taken within 72 hours of the unprotected sex can prevent pregnancy. Please report to your Gynecologist to get the prescription for the same.
After taking the pills, you may have some amount of bleeding after few days which is due to the effect of the hormone in the pills. Also, your next menses may get delayed. Please do not become panicky for these incidences.
Alternatively, if you have crossed 72 hours, you may opt for intrauterine device before you complete 120 hours after the unprotected sex. This can prevent your pregnancy, and moreover will give you ongoing protection for may years to come.
I hope this helps you today.
