Suggest Treatment When ALT, HDL And Hemoglobin Count Is Low

Hi, I am 37 years old and had gastric bypass 4 years ago. Today I had a wellness panel done and I was flagged on 3 things. My AST (sgot) level is low at 11. My ALT (sgpt) is 17. My HDL is 17, and my hemoglobin is 11.9. I am curious if these could be low due to my gastric bypass surgery and if there are any vitamins I can take to raise these levels?. Are these levels to be really concerned about? Thank you in advance. Cari C

Hello,

regarding the low AST, there is absolutely nothing to worry about.
Your low HDL cannot be attributed to the gastric bypass. In order to raise it as much as you can you should try the following:
- stop smoking (if you smoke)
- engage in a daily program of mild physical activity
- avoid fatty food, saturated fat etc and prefer to use olive oil when oil is needed for cooking.
- keep your body weight as close to the ideal as possible

Your low hemoglobin could be related to the gastric bypass. Cutting the stomach may impair the absorption of nutrients including iron and vitamin B12. You should check your ferritin, folic acid and B12 levels in the blood and use supplements if required. This is something that can be easily corrected and should not worry you too much, if you treat it properly and promptly!

Kind Regards!
