Suggest Treatment For Wrist Tendonitis

I am a 68 yearly male. To night I heard a loud pop in my right wrist followed by extreme pain, (I was in tears). I went to the emergency room, was x-rayed and told there was no break but have severe tendonsis. I can not make a fist or move my hand in ant direction or grab anything without severe pain. I think I may have ruptured one of the two tendons that are fixed to the thumb. Would I need MRI to confirm this? The ER Dr. gave shot for pain, a pill for pain, and a prescription for anti-inflammatory and more pain meds.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

I am so sorry about your wrist.
Severe tendinosis can lead to tendon rupture which is extremely painful, especially in the hand.

An ultrasound can help show any damage in the area. Yes an MRI of the affected wrist will show exactly the extent of injury and damage.

I recommend :
-an orthopedic consult
-an MRI to see for degree of injury
- arm rest (being the right hand, it is difficult to do but rest it as much as possible)
-elevate the arm above heart level whenever at rest
-ice the area to reduce inflammation (wrap ice in a thin cloth)
-anti inflammatory may help reduce pain temporarily but if the pain persists or remains the same, consult the orthopedic Doctor asap

Recovery is possible but slow.
Will take about 6 months to a year for complete recovery. Initial recovery may take 2-3 months.

Rest, physiotherapy will aid the healing process.
Surgery may be required if the pain or injury is too severe.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Hope you feel better soon.
