Suggest Treatment For Vitiligo And Severe Hives

My son who will be 17 in July , had trace amounts of protine in his urine. He also has very foamy urine and it seems he has a slower than normal flow. He had a blood workup and it sshows he is right at the end of normal levels on his sugar and thyroid and is B12 deficient . He has a lot of vitiligo that started about 4 years ago. This winter he developed severe hives to the cold. I am very worried.

Hi,

Proteins in urine is a significant sign of a kidney disease however I would advise you to repeat the test and if the protein is found in significant amount then he would need a proper work up to find out the reason for it. Trace amount of protein may not suggest a disease however you need to repeat the test. Low levels of thyroid and Vitiligo may be related as both can happen as a result of autoimmune (when your own body's immune system makes antobodies against your own tissues)disease. You can manage hypothyroidism with proper medication and its easy to control the condition.

Vitiligo doesn't have any definitive treatment however some cases have been significantly benefitted with phototherapy. I would advise you to consult a dermatologist and start phototherapy sessions for vitiligo. Since your son has 2 autoimmune conditions, I would advise you to consult a nephrologist also to rule out any autoimmune involvement of kidneys if the urine shows proteins again.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
