Suggest Treatment For Vertigo In An Elderly Person
My aunt has been told she has vertigo and there is nothing that can be done for it. she has a feeling like she is in an earthquake and then starts to vomit for an hour or two. She had one in December and then had 3 in march. She is 80 years old and has always been very healthy. Is there truly nothing that can be done for her?
Vertigo can be caused by infection or inflammation. It is treated with antibiotics or steroids to reduce swelling and infection. If vertigo is caused due to Meniere's disease, diuretics are prescribed to reduce pressure from fluid build up. Get clinically examined by an ENT, he may prescribe Betahistine (16mg) to prevent the spinning of the head.
If vertigo is cause by underlying disease(tumor, injury to brain and neck) , the underlying disease should be treated at the earliest. Physical therapy like vestibular rehabilitation and canalith repositioning maneuvers are also effective to reduce the symptoms. Stay at rest and avoid doing any heavy work and avoid driving.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
