Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 53 and have had uterine fibroids for years and have still not gone through menopause. My doctor had me do a pelvic ultra sound last week and my fibroids are very large, there are several and I now have a cyst on my ovary, which I have never had before. My doctor is sending me to gynecology next week. I am very nervous. What should I expect from this visit?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Uterine fibroid ( many & large sized ) & an ovarian cyst is your problem. Many a times fibroid recede in size after menopause( being cut off from supportive hormone )... but some times they continue to grow & cause symptoms ( pressure i lower abdomen/ difficulty in urination ) *Treatment offered is going to be a gynecologist's decision - wait & watch after menopause would be a normal strategy .... but you have many of them, so you may be subjected & large too, the doctor may decide to remove the only & preserve the uterus . * About ovarian cyst... it again depend on size ( more than 10 mm sized ones are usually preffered to be removed . Doctor may also undertake histopathology of the removed cyst to exclude possibility of cancer. Thanks
