Suggest Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis, Acid Reflux And Sleep Apnea In An Elderly Person

Hello, I am a 55 year old white male. I have crohn s disease along with ulcerative colitis, acid reflux and Sleep Apnea. I have been having pain in my upper right part of my abdomen, after an Ultrasound to check for gallstones. I have been told that I have Fatty Liver with focal Fatty sparing adjacent to the gallbladder bed. And Mild Splenomegaly. What am I looking at long term? Could I be looking at cirrhosis issues along with a need for a liver transplant? What would be the chances of developing any form of cancer in my liver? I am taking Azathioprine for my crohn s disease, which carries a small percentage of developing a cancer long term. I had a younger sister with Fatty Liver disease which she passed away from Liver Cancer.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Since you have been diagnosed with fatty liver, you need to stay away from oily, fatty, junk food. Take home made boiled food, take more berries & veggies, whole grain, cut on a high protein diet. Your acid reflux will be under control with this menu. For acid reflux take high fiber diet, antacid & PPI's.

Fatty liver can repair by itself, control your blood sugar levels, obesity, cholesterol, maintain weight as per BMI, take supplements to reduce excess liver fat, take food cooked in olive oil, maintain healthy diet & exercise.

Get examined at quarterly intervals, get follow up check up done, take medications as prescribed. If the fatty liver does not respond to treatment & fails to reverse, it progresses to cirrhosis or cancer.

At this stage, you may need surgery or liver transplantation. If you are careful with your diet, medications, treatment schedules than you will recover.

Stay away from stress, addictions if any, take adequate rest & stay well hydrated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
