Suggest Treatment For Torn Frenulum

Hi, my 16 year old son has torn the frenulum and after seeing the doctor who saw the bleeding from the top, wrapped a soft bandage before sending us home for him to shower and use a mild salt water bath. He is currently in the toilet and wanting to know if it is safe to allow the foreskin back over the head as the bleeding has stopped?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your 16 yr old son has torn the frenulum. Your son has been examined by his treating doctor and the torn frenulum has been wrapped in a soft bandage. Once the bleeding stops he should not keep fiddling with the foreskin but apply a thin layer of Soframycin ointment to prevent infection. Yes, he can put it back. He may experience burning sensation during urination, more frequent urination.

Loss of sensation may occur if the wound gets infected. If you notice any pus on the tear, a foul smell or redness of the skin, infection may be present, report to your treating doctor as he may need a course of antibiotics. He is suggested to abstain from any sexual activity or masturbation till the wound gets healed completely. It may get prone to tearing again if fiddled before it has completely healed. Avoid touching it.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
