Suggest Treatment For Thyroid Nodule With Atypical Cells On Biopsy

I am a 61 year old woman with a thyroid nodule. Identical twin sister had thyroid papillary cancer 5 years ago. My latest biopsy shows mild atpica cells. Sending for a second opinion at Columbia pathology lab. What should I do? Remove thyroid? Will my condition turn into cancer?

Hi,
Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

If there are atypical cells in thyroid FNAC it is better to get it operated. Let us wait for the second opinion from Columbia pathology lab. If it showing cancer or suspicious of cancer it is better to go ahead with thyroidectomy. If the reports are normal, we can wait for a repeat test after 6-12 months.

The chance of malignancy in a thyroid nodule can range from 5-20%. So majority of thyroid nodules are not cancerous.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help
With warm regards,
