Suggest Treatment For Synovial Cyst On Spine And Sciatica Pain

Hello Doctor, Of recent I had a blood clot in my left leg. My vascular surgeon put an IVC filter in my right side. I have since been on Coumadin with no ill effects. At the same time I was discovered to have a synovial cyst on my spine. I saw a neurosurgeon for that. When it was discovered I was having excruciating leg pain (before the IVC filter) but the sciatica pain has seemed to resolve and it was stated I may not have to have surgery for that. During all this I was scheduled for a hysterectomy and underwent that surgery successfully . Of late I have been having increasing leg tightness, and feet swelling. My internist said it wasn t vascular, but it is beginning to concern me because of the leg tightness. Any recommendations? I am a female age 67. Ps I do have a fib, but no diabetes. I do watch my salt intake. Does Coumadin cause swelling?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the Caumadin is not causing the leg swelling, but it is the underlying vascular circulation compromisewhich is responsible for the swelling both legs. Kindly discuss the need of a Doppler ultrasound of the lower limb circulation for best evaluation of the case and management in accordance to that. Till that time, follow basic rules such as:
- Avoid prolong leg dependent position
- Avoid long drives, sitting cross legs
- Avoid smoking, if involved
- Continue Coumadin
- Avoid excess fat and cholesterol in diet
- Control of blood sugar and cholesterol levels

I do not think need of Synovial cyst surgery for swelling both legs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
