Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Postpartum Depression

My daughter shows signs of post partum depression / psychosis. She has stated several times that she doesn t want to be a mother she has always hated kids and having a baby hasn t changed that. She said she wants to come and visit him but doesn t want to give up custody. She said after two days she wants to either kill herself or toss the baby on the ground. She says she made a dr appt for tomorrow I asked of I could gon, she said no you ll fry me and ill end up in a psych ward. I said no I just want to hear you tell a professional what u have told me and ill say nothing. She flipped out and siad to put her son I. The car seat. I told her no she needs to see a dr first. Then she stated I would regret this and I would never see her again. I am worried and do not want her child I want her to want her child. She has had him maybe two to 3 weeks total since he was born . Please advise

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I am sorry this is a very difficult situation and not one that can be addressed well without a conversation.

Your daughter poses a serious risk to herself and her baby and I urge you to talk immediately with the baby's pediatrician to inform him or her. You can also talk with your daughter's physician who can help her with medications.

This is an urgent situation and I advise you to take action right away to talk with her and the baby's doctors. It doesn't mean the baby will be taken away from her forever, but she needs urgent treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh,
