Suggest Treatment For Swollen, Painful, Puss Filled Thumb Of A Child

My 7 year old daughter s thumb looks infected, i can see pus,red on the side of her thumb. Her thumb is swollen and has been that way for two days. My daughter said, her thumb is not painful unless she touches it or her thumb makes contact with something. i tried to take out the pus but it was hurting her..i applied neosporin ointment to her thumb this am,but when she went home after school,i noticed it to be more swollen and i can see more pus.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the symptoms of pus formation and redness or inflammation at the side of thumb seems to be due to infection in the area of skin near the nail and occurs commonly due to causes like bacterial or fungal infection..
It can occur due to conditions like traumatic injury to the side of the nail like while cutting nail, nail biting habit, hitting of thumb etc.
The white lump seems to be most probably due to formation of a pus filled abscess..
As the swelling and pus is increasing even after applying neosporin,I would therefore suggest you to consult a General Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation is generally sufficient for diagnosis..
You can be advised to apply a combination of steroid, antibiotic and antifungal ointment over it..
If it is painful topical application of numbing ointment and taking anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen can help..
Do cool compresses over it..
If the lump is large and painful Incision and drainage followed by a course of antibiotics and painkillers will relieve..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
