My vaginal area is extremely swollen and almost purple in appearance. I ve had itching for a couple of months. I attributed it to a yeast infection. I contacted my Dr and she prescribed diflucan. My symptoms have worsened. It burns when I urinate to the point of tears both in my urethra and the skin surrounding it. it is hard to walk or sit or cough or laugh

It seems that along with yeast infection due to severe itching there might be having secondary bacterial infection as well.
You might require one course of antibiotic medicine like Amoxicilin or Ofloxacilin for 5 days.
Apply triple action cream locally.
Keep local hygiene clean, dry and airy.
Ok and take care.
