Suggest Treatment For Swelling On The Thigh Post Injury
Hi. I participated in a powerlifting competition 3weeks ago, during my last deadlift attempt I fell backwards the the bar landed on my R thigh. I ended up with a large contusion that was ecchymotic for approximate,y 10 days and the swelling was localized and quite significant. Now that I am 3 weeks post injury I continue to have a significant localized area of swelling that is about the size of a softball. How long will it take for the swelling to resolve? Is there anything I can do to help with the swelling? Thank you!
Swelling can continue for up to 6 weeks in some cases, though it is usually shorter than this time frame in the majority of persons. It tends to persist longer if the injury was severe. Even if it is not painful, the use of anti inflammatory pain killers would help reduce the swelling which is part of the body's inflammatory response. A warm compress to the area, 2 to 3 times daily for 15 to 20 minutes, may also help as well.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
