Suggest Treatment For Swelling In Ankles And Feet

Over the past month I have had swelling in my ankles and feet....it comes and goes a few days at a time and seems to go down by time I wake in the morning. By time I leave work end of day, the swelling seems to reappear. I am also Type I diabetic (juvenile), have sinus allergies, have trouble breathing at times and from time to time experience shortness of breath. Is this something I should be overly concerned about since it is not constant?

Hello,

You are suffering from swelling in the ankles and feet. The swelling goes down in the morning and returns back. You have history of having sinus allergies, troubled breathing due to it. You are also type 1 diabetic (juvenile). You are suggested to limit the amount of salt intake in your diet, avoid salty snacks. Maintain your blood glucose level as well.

The cause of swelling on the feet and ankles is commonly due to water retention, thyroid dysfunction, developing kidney disease, anemia, being overweight, sitting / standing for a long time, lymphedema, venous insufficiency, hormonal changes, etc. You should get clinically examined by a GP, get thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH), routine kidney function tests, CBC, urinalysis, other required blood tests and investigations done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms.

You will be treated accordingly. In the meantime, maintain healthy weight. Do regular exercise and walking. For better lymphatic circulation, stay active. Avoid sedentary life. Stay away from addictions if any. You are suggested to keep your foot on a stool while sitting & on a pillow when on bed.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
