Suggest Treatment For Sweating Caused By Anxiety

I have always had anxiety. Recently I have begun sweating (really sweating!) when I think of something stressful and have gone days with a rapid heart beat and trembling. Eventually it will subside when the issue I was thinking of is resolved or put into perspective. I have had addiction issues in the past with xanax and other anti anxiety drugs. Is there anything I can do short of medication to control this or is it at a dangerous level and needs medication?r

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi, thanks for your question.

I'm glad to help with your concerns.

First, i'd tell you some lifestyle changes which can improve the oversweating.

1.Use antiperspirants regularly.
2. Avoid wearing tight-fitting, thick clothes.
3. Avoid clothes made of artificial fibers such as nylon.
4. Avoid foods and drinks that exacerbate sweating such as alcohol and spicy foods.

In addition to those tips, treating the anxiety, being the root cause, should be instituted and i would suggest seeing a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist who are trained specialists who help patients with psychological disorders such as anxiety.

The psychologist or psychaitrist would help relieve your anxiety through talk therapy and behavioral therapy. Drugs are not usually recommended for anxiety treatment as they make sweating worse.

There are medications for treatment of sweating as well, you could get these from the psychiatrist or your primary care doctor. These include propantheline and oxybutynin.

I hope i have answered your question.

Please get back to me if you've got more questions.

Best wishes.
