Hello! My mother,85 years, had a stroke in january(in swedish named dysartri and dysfagi). She can not eat anything(food through a tube)she can not talk clearly, just some few words easy for her to pronounce.Having a big trouble with mucus. Before the stroke she was able to live in her apartment was able to take care of her self. Now she is in a hospital. She is depressed and was asking me today what is the chances to get better and when am I able to feel that? How about other people, has they improved,is it a big amount or a small who could be better? I told her that I will try to see what I can find in the internet but I have not find any answer so I would like to ask you if it is possible to give a answer to her questions? It is so sad to see my mother like this so I have the same questions to you.Thank you for the possibility to asking questions. /Maria.

I am sorry about the situation with your mother Maria.

It seems she has had a stroke more likely in the brain stem, in the area responsible for the work of the muscles of the throat making possible speech and swallowing.
Usually there is improvement, a gradual one, but improvement is expected in the first 6 months mostly and many patients do regain their ability to swallow. But not all patients are the same though and it is not an exact science, especially in people of an advanced age.
You should discuss with your doctor also the extent of damage and whether the rest of the brain has had previous impairment, those can make recovery more difficult.

I hope things work out for the best.
