Suggest Treatment For Stomach Cramps, High Fever And Vomiting In Children

my grandson is dealing with some type of virus he has contracted since age 4. He was diagnosed with asthma, allergic rhinitis and ecezma and in April of this year the adenovirus he is having an episode now just started school last Thursday and took sick early Monday morning. Stomach cramps, high fever, pain in joints, severe headache, vomiting, asthma attack, allergy attack, dehydration, and round red bruise like spots on him and not in the same area each time he has an episode. Took sick at school yesterday wouldn t stop vomiting took to ER. This has been an ongoing problem for the past three years and I m wondering if has has a very serious health problem with such a low immune system. His mother had pulmonary embolism at 5 months with him. Do you think there is a problem with his blood. And he has very bad night sweats and I check his glucose and it runs in the low 50 s. He goes back to his Pediatrician tomorrow and I am not settling for an answer of it s a virus. What do you think or recommend for testing.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The case of your grandson is typical for virus infection with gastroenteritis and respiratory affection.

Indeed, diarrhea and vomiting will cause dehydration, explaining the night sweats. Plus, his blood sugar is as low as 50s, which can also explain the night sweats too.

However, you should check for:
- anemia (complete blood count, iron levels, ferritin levels)
- liver/kidney problems (liver/kidney function test)
- urine analysis
- vit.D, calcium, and check blood electrolytes
- abdominal ultrasound
- thyroid function test

Keep well hydrated meanwhile.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
