Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Fever And Headaches

Friday I started to develop a sore throat, and by Saturday it further progressed into fever and head ache as well. I thought I may of had the flu, strep throat, or possibly tonsillitis. When Monday came, I had an appointment with my doctor (conveniently)... and he believed I had mono, after my blood work came in. He prescribed me antibiotics and I started them that day. Since than, my fever has subsided, along with my night sweats and abdominal pain. My question is... since I immediately took action, and seem to be recovering very quickly... would it harm me to drink alcohol? I m feeling myself again and the only symptom I have is the left side ofyou throat is still a little sore. I baught tickets to a concert and really want to go. Please give me an idea of where my health is at and the pros and cons of drinking alcohol when recovering from a very minor case of mono.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Am glad that you are recovering.
Yes alcohol should be avoided as the liver may become affected and inflamed in mononucleosis and alcohol can worsen the situation.

In addition to that, certain anti biotics and medications are processed in the liver and can put an additional strain on it. This is another reason why alcohol should be avoided till you are off medications and have recovered completely.

Mononucleosis can take a month or two to completely recover. I suggest that you avoid alcohol for that period of time.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you good health
