General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Viral infection of the tonsils usually goes away without treatment within 2 weeks. Sore throat with, swollen glands, a sudden fever above 101°F, and without symptoms of an upper respiratory tract infection may point to a bacterial infection like strep that needs to be treated with antibiotics.

A peritonsillar abscess occurs when a collection of pus forms and infection spreads beyond the tonsils into the neck and chest.
Antibiotics can treat an early infection. Sometimes a collection of pus needs to be drained by a procedure called incision and drainage.

Kindly visit your ENT physician for immediate treatment with appropriate antibiotics.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
