Hi, im having a endoscopy and a colonoscopy done in 3 days.i suffer from social phobia, ptsd, severe anxiety, panic disorder and ocd.my question is do i have to be put to sleep for these procedures? Or can i be awake and be giving a pain killer and mild sedative for this? I hear you have a choice and if thats true, then i perfer to be awake during both.I have many fears and phobias and being put to sleep is one them. What should i do? What are my options?

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You have social phobia, severe anxiety, panic disorder and OCD and these disorders cause significant distress and result in severe impairment in functioning of day to day activities.

Usually endoscopies and colonoscopies are done under local anaesthesia and are not done in general anaesthesia. So you wouldn't be put in sleep for them.

You can ask your doctor to remain awake during the procedures.

Try to visit a psychiatrist or take opinion prior to procedure to relieve severe anxiety during procedures. Low dose clonazepam can help to relieve anxiety and will result in better functioning.

Thanks, Hope this helps you.
