Suggest Treatment For Sleeplessness

My daughter has her second concussion in a year. She is having trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. Only Tylenol PM works to get a good night sleep. Her doctor recommended melatonin which she tried 1mg last night. Even though she was sleepy she was wide awake 2 hours later and when she went back to sleep had vivid dreams, not a very restful sleep. Should she keep trying it or is there something else as clearly she needs rest to get better. Thank you!

Hello
Welcome here.
I can understand your concerns for your daughter.
Your daughter has suffered a concussion in past and is having insomnia now.
I have some suggestions which would help her:
Avoid napping during the day.
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol too close to bedtime.
Exercise can promote good sleep. A relaxing exercise, like yoga, can be done before bed to help initiate a restful night's sleep.
Stay away from large meals close to bedtime.
Ensure adequate exposure to natural light. Light exposure helps maintain a healthy sleep-wake cycle.
Establish a regular relaxing bedtime routine. Try to avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep.
Associate your bed with sleep. It's not a good idea to use your bed to watch TV, listen to the radio, or read.
A warm bath and warm milk before sleep would help.

If tylenol helps her to sleep, she can take this drug.
If melatonin is not helping, then she should discontinue this drug.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
