Suggest Treatment For Sleeping Disorder

My father is on several medications, we believe that 1 or more of them is making him extremely sleepy. So much so, that we can barely get him awake long enough to get him to drink a sip of water, or to eat anything. He is in end stage renal disease, and has Myoclonus. This has all happened within the last 6 months or so, that he has been so sleepy, he just lays in bed, because he literally can fall asleep between bites of food. He is very susceptible to any drug that you put him on. He is in good shape actually as far as his dialysis though. If that were the only problem he had, he wouldn t have any. His medications are as follows: Clonazepam, Calcium Acetate, Carvedilol, Clopidogrel, Lansoprazole, Magnesium, Paroxetine, Epogen, Pro-Stat, Rena Vite, Prednisone, and occasionally Stool Softeners as needed. Do any of these drugs stand out to you that we might want to further research? We are running out of options and he is wasting away. Please Help! Thank you so much in advance for your help! Brenda

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. His poor debilitated condition is one of the reason he is feeling extremely sleepy. He has ESRD, myoclonus and is on many medicines which are main reasons. Out of the medicines he is taking Clonazepam is known to cause excessive sleepiness and result in sedation. As he is feeling sleepy through out the day so as per my opinion the doses of this drug should be reduced or the drug should be stopped. Paroxetine is a SSRI drug and this also causes severe sedation. Other medicines of SSRI group like Escitalopram or Sertraline can be tried which are not associated with severe sedation. Sertraline would be safe for his condition also.

Please discuss with his doctor regarding the medicines I have mentioned.

Thanks. Hope this helps you.
