Suggest Treatment For Skin Dermatitis

My lower right arm near the wrist had skin dermatitis. I scratched it, the skin was torn a bit. Normally this kind of wound cleared after i applied Hydrocortisone cream 1% several days later. But, this time it spread and form a ring of redness about 1 inch with outskirt had open sore. I went to see my doctor and he put on Bactroban (Mupirocin) 2% ointment, wrap it up and gave me Prednisone 10 mg for 5 days . Two days later it developed blister and ooze out liquid, wound spread to 2 inches. I went back to see him. He said it might be infection. He said it might be infection. He told me to stop taking Prednisone and started taking Amoxicillin 500 mg 3 times a day for 14 days. Now after 5 days, my lower arm swell up, more blisters developed and spread to over 3 x 5 inches. Some of face area had contact with Bactroban also developed swell and forming blisters. Now my face looks like forming white/yellowish crust. It even got to my eye lips which swell up. What might be it and what can be done?

Hello,

Firstly, we will discuss about your current issue that is crusty rash over the face and swelling over the eyes and lips.

The rash is likely to be caused by infection; dermatitis or any other rash should not be scratched.

As that will breach the continuity of skin and make it prone to various infections which can spread to any part of the body. Once the infection is cleared from the body using antibiotics rash will subside.

However, the swelling of eyelid and lips can be an alarm for drug allergy or anaphylaxis as you are started on oral antibiotic few days ago and topical ointments like Bactroban is less likely to be the cause.

Kindly contact your doctor and inform about the swelling as it can cause breathing difficult due to swelling of airways.

In case it is found that you are allergic to the certain medication, the medication will be stopped immediately and a new antibiotic might be prescribed.

Lastly, dermatitis or eczema can be prevented by few lifestyle modifications like keeping skin moisturized, using mild soaps, using lukewarm water for bath, regular exfoliation and using over the counter urea-based products like Calmurid.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
