Suggest Treatment For Shortness Of Breath And Chest Pain

My husband was just in the er last night for shortness of breath, chest pain, and fluid retention. The EKG, chest x-ray, and blood work all came back normal. They treated h for his fluid in his feet. They gave him a prescription for lasix and sent him home. He took his blood pressure today and it was 134/100. Should he go back to the er. His feet are even more swollen then yesterday. He also wants to sleep all the time

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Shortness of breath, chest pain and fluid retention always reveal a cardiovascular pathology like a Heart failure. However, normal ECG,chest X ray exclude this.Other causes of fluid retention that may give respiratory manifestations are renal and liver problems.I will assume normal blood work means liver and kidney function tests were ok.
With a probable heart, kidney or liver origin eliminated, any other cause will not be life-threatening and can be managed symptomatically with close follow-up.His BP value is high but not a problem yet.He will only need anti-hypertensive medications if he is hypertensive.I will suggest he should continue with lasilix, elevate his legs while lying, rest well, reduce fluid intake, reduce salt intake and observe. If the symptoms persist, he will need to be reevaluated by a Cardiologist.
Hope my answer will help you
Best regards
