I m started 7 day treatment for shingles which had not appeared yet, on Monday. Valacyclovir HCL 1 gram tablet 3 times a day. My last dose was Sunday. The rash has faded but still hurts. Rare is the itching. What should I expect and what can I do for the pain?
Hi. As per your case history of shingles, my treatment advice is - 1. Pain due to shingles can last upto 6 months. 2. Apply a lignocaine gel twice daily on affected skin. 3. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen for pain for 7-10 days. 4. Other treatment options are oral gabapentin, carabamazepine and amitryptiline taken only after consulting a dermatologist.
Thanks. Dr. Harshit bhachech. MBBS, DDVL.
