Suggest Treatment For Severely Painful Otitis Externa

My dad has a significant otitis externa with local severe pain when the area is touched, I'm going to visit him now with a opthmalogic scope to see if it's all just extrnal to the canal if if the canal is also inflamed. What's a good course of treatment? I was going to start with Barrow's Solution applied directly to the infected area 2-3 times a day. I have a good image if there is a place to send it.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain in case if your father is suffering from Otitis externa that is an infection of outer ear canal then application of Burow,s solution that contains Aluminium Acetate and has antibacterial properties is not alone sufficient..

You should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..

In case of infection the physician can advise you antibiotics like Augmentin, anti-inflammtory painkiller like Aleve or Motrin, decongestants and steroids..
Antibiotic and steroid ear drops can help..
Avoid picking the ears as it can cause injury as well as increase infection..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have severely painful otitis externa. Need not to worry. You should take proper course of antibiotics along with antiinflammatory medications. It will approximately take around 10 days to get improve if you will take medicines regularly . I would suggest you to keep your ear dry ,which is very important water can make infection worse , give warm dry compresses to your external ear . If condition doesn't get better in 10 days then again consult your ENT specialist. Doctor will examine completely with otoscope and can perform audiometry testing as well. Start treatment after proper prescription.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
