Hello,

Stomach pain in a diabetic is commonly caused by heartburn, indigestion, problem or damage to the vagus nerve, etc. Your husband is suggested to take antacids or PPIs, one stat when needed for relieve from heartburn and gas formation. He can take digestive enzymes for better digestion. He should take well cooked food and avoid raw food.

Get your husband clinically examined, medication like prokinetics may be of help if he is suffering from gastroparesis. Dietary changes like taking small meals 4-5 times a day will be helpful. Back pain may be indicative of developing diabetic neuropathy. Get your husband clinically examined by a Neurologist, he should get Nerve conduction velocity test, and required imaging tests done.

He will be accordingly treated. He is advised to take naproxen, one stat after food for symptomatic relief. He should loose weight if obese and avoid sedentary lifestyle. He is advised to do regular walking. He should do exercises under a Physical therapist to remain fit. Blood glucose level should be under control at all cost.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
