Suggest Treatment For Severe Sore Throat

Hello. For the last two days I have had a severe sore throat. Nearly unable to swallow even liquid at times. My throat is now getting better, but I have unstoppable hiccups. I assume these symptoms are related. Should I just wait it out, or is there something I should do?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern.

As you mention in your query that you have severe sore throat . In case of severe sore throat you should consult doctor even if it is getting better .Because sore throat has certain complications which can be dangerous like abscess formation and rheumatic fever (rare).

Your doctor can prescribe you painkillers like paracetamol , antibiotics if you have sore throat due to bacterial infection or in severe sore throat ,warm saline gargles and decongestants if you have blocked nose .You should also prevent yourself from dehydration by drinking lots of fluids .

The problem due to hiccups is not probable because of sore throat .It could have many reasons like coughing forcefully, excessive alcohol ,laughing loudly ,eating quickly ,eating spicy food and because of certain medicines like barbiturates and steroids .

Hiccups can be started when above factors irritates vocal cords .diaphragm muscles or phrenic nerve .They generally go away by themselves in short time .But if they persist for more then 48 hours means they pointing towards some serious underlying condition.

Some home remedies to get ride of hiccups are suck on hard candy , drink warn milk ,chew mint leaves and eat peanut butter .Most important remedy is to divert yourself by calling close friend or doing something you love to do .

If they persist for more then 48 hours you should immediately consult doctor .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
