Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain During Urination

My mother in law was in a nursing home for rehab on her knee, when she came home she complained of severe pain during urination, this was Saturday. I called the Dr and got a script for cipro, she took a full dose that day. On Tuesday I took her to the Dr. They straight cathed her and all they got was pus. The following Saturday morning her commode was full of undiluted bright red blood and clots. She refused to go to the hospital until her Dr convinced her on Monday. During that time she continued to pass copious amounts of blood and clots. She has now been in the hospital for almost 2weeks. We strongly suspect neglect on the part of the nursing home as she was also released with a case of pneumonia. In both cases they did not listen to my M-I-L s continual complaints of a rapidly worsening cough and severe pain and burning while urinating. Mom is 86 but mentally intact. My question is related to the information just received yesterday that she may be contagious. What is contagious and how do you catch it. I am Moms caregiver, she has a multitude of problems, a fib, copd, peritoneal dialysis...Thank You!
