Suggest Treatment For Severe Leg Cramps In A Child

my nephew is having severe leg cramps at night and sometimes during the day. He has been to a doctor and he does not have insurance and she has decided he needs an MRI and says it might take 6 months to get the MRI and has told him not to take any medicine other than what he was taking which is ibupropin (ms). He is miserable with these leg cramps. He also has an injury to his back which he got from falling down the stairs getting a wheelchair about two years ago. He will be 63 years of age in January. Will this be expensive to get a report and to tell us what to do.

Hi,

I admire your positive outlook and congratulate you for the attitude

Now I guess you have severe leg cramp

There are lots of pathological causes responsible for your problems

However, let me give my opinion here.

As per your symptoms history is concerned please do few investigations first:-

1)Do a physical exam for PAD(Peripheral artery disease) for specific signs like whooshing sounds(bruits) and ankle-brachial index by your treating doctor

2)after confirmation he will advise you an ultrasound examinations to confirm

3)Do check your fasting blood sugar and lipid profile

4)treatment based upon two goals like leg pain and stop progression of the disease

5)stop smoking

6)medications needed like STATIN, to reduce low density lipo protein, If Blood ressure present take medications and if sugar present take medications for it and try to prevent blood clots if present.

7)add cilostazol a drug which we add for this condition to improve blood flow.

8)Finally if every alternative fails then he will be required angioplasty.

For this you need expert's guidance by your treating Doctor.

Hope this helps.
