Severe cranial pain left side. Been to ER twice, pain debilitating. Not migraine. No history of such. Catscan shows no problems. 69 yr old male with Graves disease, now in bed with low grade fever, chills & severe head pain. Ongoing 6 days. ER ineffective with pain control. Help?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

One side headache in a patient over 60 years old should bring the suspicion of temporal arteritis. I would advise you to have an ERS done and if it is very high, temporal arteritis is likely and you need to have a high dose of steroids to help control the pain.

Treating temporal arteritis as soon as possible is important to also preserve vision.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj
