Suggest Treatment For Severe Headache

When sitting and turn my head to either right or left for a few minutes I experience pain in my head. It s like a sudden headache. When I straighten my head for a minute or so the pain gets away. Any idea what could cause this? I hav not received any recent injuries to my neck. I am a 76 year old woman.

Hello,

Feeling headache while moving head from side to side is a common symptom of sinus headache. Our sinuses are filled with air and when the lining of the sinus gets infected, feeling headache during movements of head is expected.

I would advise you to take over-the-counter painkillers like Acetaminophen 500 mg thrice a day for relief from pain. You can also use over-the-counter decongestants for a week. Antihistamine such as Levocetrizine 5 mg (Levocet) once a day for 5 days and antibiotic such as Azithromycin 500 mg (Azee 500) once a day for 3 days can help. The best treatment for sinus headache is steam inhalation. You can boil a bowl of water and put your face over it in such a way that you can inhale the steam while not burning your face. Cover yourself and bowl with a towel. Electric steam inhalers are also available over-the-counter. Take rest and have plenty of fluids. These applications for about a week should relieve the sinus pressure and so headache.

If you do not find relief within a week, visit a physician for physical examination. I hope this answer helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. Take care.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
