Suggest Treatment For Severe Hand And Leg Cramps

I've been experiencing severe hand cramps (both hands) off & on for several weeks. Generally they happen in the afternoon and are very painful. After they start I can't open the cramped hand with out using the other one to assist. They start with the thumb curling inward to the palm then the fingers start cramping up as well. At that point the cramping hand is not usable. I occasionally get woke up by pain full leg cramps (calf & lower leg, one side or both) requiring getting out of bed to walk them off. I get potassium from both bananas & POM pomegranate juice as I've been told cramps can occur from low levels. I'm 59, male, take Losartin 100mg daily to control blood pressure but no other meds. Any ideas on how to lessen or eliminate the problems?
Thanks,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

Considering the case history that you have Hypertension and taking Losartan for the same, the symptoms as mentioned in your post can be either due to side effect of Losartan or due to poor control of your blood pressure.

Other causes can be:
1. Para-spinal muscle spasm due to maintaining incorrect posture.
2. Inadequate hydration status & electrolyte imbalance of the body
3. Dietary deficiencies of certain nutrients like Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Folic acid, etc. which help in blood formation & nerve conduction.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of nervigenic agents (like Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & multimineral supplements including iron, Calcium & Vitamin D needs to be added in your diet.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult a Neurologist & get a complete Neurological examination done.
Certain investigations like complete blood count, serum electrolyte estimation, fresh estimation of blood pressure & blood sugar levels & nerve conduction studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
