Suggest Treatment For Severe Fatigue And Excessive Sweating

I have taken nitrofurantoin capsules for 2 & 1/2 days now (1 capsule twice a day for 14 days), for a UTI. I do not feel any better, and have had some chills. I also get sweaty hot and fatigued easily (much more than usual). I am 73, and have never taken this drug before; the list of side effects and complications is very concerning.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately all medications have potential side effects and complications that may or may not occur. Most side effects do not occur in the majority of persons using medications but if you are experiencing problems then you should speak to your doctor discontinuing the medication and using an alternative. Another antibiotic may help to treat your urinary symptoms. There are a number of different ones that you may be able to tolerate better.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
