Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea In A Kid

My 2 year old grand daughter has had diarrhea for over a week now and her dr didn t suggest giving her probiotics or anything to help stop it. He wants stool samples but she is still in diapers which makes it extremely difficult to collect when it s so runny. She does drink a lot of water but I think she needs the pedilyte and probiotics - what do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Diarrhea is the bowel movement more than normal that is three times a day which is loose and watery in consistency. The cause for diarrhea are bacterial infection, viral infection, indigestion of food, food intolerance or allergy to the food, parasitic infestation, inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome. Notable side effect of diarrhea in children is dehydration. Repeated loose stools results in loss of water and minerals from the body.

If the diarrhea lasts for 1 or 2 days, the condition is acute. Chronic diarrhea lasts for weeks. Diarrhea more than 2 days should be investigated and treated. Stool culture is the investigation option. Rotavirus vaccine is available to prevent the common cause of viral diarrhea. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infection. Dehydration should be corrected with oral rehydration solution should be used for dehydration correction. Plain glucose or plain water should be avoided in children. Visit the pediatrician for further management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
