Suggest Treatment For Severe Cramps In The Leg And Thigh

Dr. prescribed Fosamax. Almost immediately I developed severe cramping in left leg and thigh. I stopped Fosamax after 4 weeks but cramping continues. It s been 4 months since I stopped the drug. What can I do to lower pain/cramping and will it ever go away. It is seriously lowering my quality of life.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, thigh and leg cramps or pain can be the side effects of Fosamax (Alendronate) that used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. It is also caused by disorders of the bones, muscles, ligaments, joints, blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue, and skin. Here's the possibility:
1. Diabetic neuropathy, tingling and pain due to diabetes mellitus
2. Blood clot that causes deep vein thrombosis
3. Arthritis

You should consult your doctor about this complaint since it continues while you already stop taking this med. The doctor will analyze this complaint and will perform the required physical examination. Investigations such as laboratory tests may be recommended.

Here's what you can do:
1. Avoid massage the sick part
2. Safe and healthy exercise
3. Eat a well-balanced diet and drink enough water
4. Get enough rest and sleep
5. You can take over-the-counter painkillers such as Paracetamol or Naproxen (Aleve)

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nurul Falah
