Suggest Treatment For Severe Cough

I have a severe cough that sometimes drives me crazy: it is like a very irritating tickle and hard cough is only thing I can do; sometimes my neck will itch, and have runny nose; I use (sugarless) cough drops, but sometimes even with them I continue to need to cough. It comes in clumps because yesterday was about all day thing, then today not at all with no cough at all; I have been on the drug Losartan, but only take with evening meal, so can it have anything to do with this recently developing persistent cough: I have just been diagnosed by cardiologist that a virus has damaged my left ventricle and also on drug Carvedilol 2 x day

General & Family Physician 's  Response
hi
thank you for asking your concern and welcome to HCM. dry cough most common side effect of ACE inhibitor drugs like enalapril or ramipril but it is not that common with ARBs like losartan but may happen. if you have history of taking ace inhibitor previously then chances increases. in that situation you have to consult your doctor. you can do absolute eosinophilic count test to see is there any eosinophilis, because eosinophilic lung problem cause dry cough. as you are saying about viral infection in heart in that case viral cough is more probability because virus gets entry into blood stream through upper respiratory tract like throat, nose. if you are having wheeze or night time cough then screen for bronchial asthma too. for the symptomatic relief you can take codein syp with prescription or you have to continue cough syp quite frequently. screen for asthma is more important as your cough is episodic also.

if you feel any doubt please ask us
regards
dr. Abhijit
