Suggest Treatment For Severe Cold And Cough

My wife is suffering from cold and cough. In december'15 he was give ofloxacin 200 twice daily for 5 days. But that does not work properly. after that she was given azithromycin 500 for od in 6 days with ambrodil syrup. It works well. But now in february'16, she is having cough. what do I do. doctor has again prescribed amoxycilin tds X 5 days with levocetrizine for 3 days. Kindly advise.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain cough and cold is most commonly due to viral infection and antibiotics will no be able to treat it as they are capable of treating only bacterial infection..
As your wife is having cough, she can take anti allergics like Levocetrizine, cough suppressant containing Dextromethorphan, cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and also take mucolytics like Ambroxol..
Do warm saline gargles, steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room..
Suck throat lozenges and sip plenty of warm water..
Avoid spicy and chilled foods..
In case if still there is no improvement in 2 weeks or if the symptoms worsen consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like throat swab culture, sputum culture and chest x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
