Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Dear doctor, My mother is 50 yrs old. She has been suffering from severe chest pain every morning after waking up. She says it seems like some weight is in the chest or something is kept there in chest. She seems to have heart burn too. Her blood test showed 221 total cholesterol, 34 HDL and 140 LDL (not completely sure but it was like border line high in between 130 and 150. I would like to know the reason why she is having so much of pain. Our doctor (physician) gave her medicines to solve acidity and not for cholesterol.
Hi, thank you for asking Healthcare Magic. With this presentation, I think the symptoms she has been having are related to peptic ulcer disease or gastro-esophageal reflux disease. All of these diseases are linked to the acidity in the stomach. Chest pain that is from the heart would generally present on exertion. She might need to do a certain laboratory test (H. pylori test). Treatment would consist of taking an antacid in association with another drug that would inhibit acid secretion (like omeprazole, cimetidine, ranitidine, etc) for about two weeks or more. Antibiotics might be necessary if the H. pylori test is positive. Also, some life style changes may be of help. These include avoiding fatty foods, alcohol, smoking, caffeine-containing foods, spicy foods and pepper.
I hope that answers your query. I wish her well
