Suggest Treatment For Severe Arthritis In The Hands
I have severe arthritis in both hands, having had two trapeziectomies, cysts removed from fingers and many steroid injections as recently as two weeks ago for which I was prescribed oramorph. Up until now I have not found much relief from co codamol and diclofenac does not agree with me. I have chronic pain in my hands almost 24 hours a day with it affecting my sleep even when I take zopiclone. 5ml of oramorph gives me really fast pain relief at the end of the day. Is this something I could ask my GP to consider long term? I was only prescribed 100ml two weeks ago ahead of my steroid injections in my right hand. The arthritis is so bad a professor in hand surgery has told me he will consider joint replacements in about 4 years time when they have been perfected in their use, I am 53 years old and about to be medically retired from my role as a police officer due to this problem. Thank you. Fiona.

Hello, As a first line management, you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief. Consult a rheumatologist and get evaluated. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
