Suggest Treatment For Severe Abdominal Pain And Dark Circles Under The Eyes

my 16 year old son had his thyroid t3 free tested the results were 7.41. High range to my knowledge. one month later he was retested and results were 4.69- normal range. the problem I am having is his symptoms are progressively getting worse. symptoms to include: headaches, sore neck (sometimes), severe abdominal pain, anger, grey pallor, dark circles under eyes, cannot eat without wanting to vomit, cannot focus-grades dropping rapidly and memory difficulty. should I continue to ask for more thyroid tests? Just because his T3 Free came down, can it still fluctuate or is this a coincidence that it went up out of normal range? Help. what avenue do I take next?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your 16 year old son.
All the symptoms may be related to multiple problems.
T3 alone has no values as this gets converted to T4 before being active and causing the symptoms.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
First of all get the full thyroid test on an empty stomach. that is Free T3, Free T4 and TSH along with anti-TPO thyroid antibodies as there is pain in neck and may be in the thyroid area due to thyroiditis. Thyroiditis can cause fluctuating thyroid hormone and TSH levels and should be correlated with clinical symptoms and signs after clinical evaluation and examination by a Doctor.
Also needed are further investigations to get the proper cause.
Being 16 year old psychological aspect of the multiple problems too should be considered and evaluated, treated if present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon.
