Psychiatrist 's  Response

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

I understand that you are concerned about your brother's psychological problem. Now, schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness which usually needs long term treatment with anti-psychotic medication. There are different types of anti-psychotic medication and the choice will depend on a number of factors like the nature of symptoms, side effects, cost, etc.

Regarding our query about opiates, there is no evidence that this is useful in the treatment of psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia. Some people may find that it helps in reducing distressing symptoms like hallucinations, but this is neither a treatment or a cure, and rather has negative effects in the long run. So, no doctor will prescribe opiates for the treatment of Schizophrenia and I suggest that you do not advise the same for your brother. Please take him to a psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation and proper treatment.

Wish you all the best.
