Suggest Treatment For Redness On The Toe

My brother, who is 65 years old, has red areas on the underside of his toes. It was first noticed about 2 wks. Now the entire outer two toes are solid red but there is no apparent pain or loss of sensation. The PA at his doctor s office thinks it may be circulation related. He is a smoker and a moderate drinker. Any ideas?

My Dear

Welcome to this site!

I have noted your details and think that your brother is suffering from Athlete's foot.

This condition is caused by the moisture that gets retained due to wearing footwear that do not allow ventilation to dry up the sweat. It is quite common occurrence in elderly patients as well as they have poor blood circulation and less resistance towards infections.

Your brother would recover very well with following measures

1 To wear footwear that permits air movement

2 to avoid activities resulting in sweating or feet remaining immersed in water like swimming

3 To get his blood sugar levels tested

4 In such patients, Clotrimazole solution gives a very good respond when applied several times a day to dried up surfaces.

5 Systemic antifungals like Terbinafine area good option

6 At this stage, anti inflammatory agents like Brufen and Anti allergics
should take care of redness and swelling that has been bothering of late

7 lastly, though it is not directly connected to the present position of your brother, encourage him to quit smoking and reconsider about the use of alcohol. after all, what is not good needs to be given another thought.

Our best wishes to you and your brother!
