Suggest Treatment For Recurring Fever, Abdominal Pain And Tonsillitis

My granddaughter who is 3 years old has non-regular high fevers (103-106) with stomach pain, joint aches and tonsils the size of golfballs and pimples in her throat from 10 days to two weeks to a month apart with ear infections once and a while. She has seen a rheumatologist and possibly has the PAHFP thing but her symptoms are not regular and she still as several months before they will help. We wanted to see an Ear Nose and Throat Dr but her Pediatrician will not allow it. Instead she is sending her to infectious disease Dr. They are both going to get fired form their jobs they are missing so much work. What do we do?

Hello,

Acute tonsillitis has to be treated immediately in the child. The following are treatment options:
1) Antibiotics syrup. Cefuroxime that contains 250mg in 5 ml. It is to be given 5ml twice daily for 10 days.
2) NSAIDs like ibuprofen or acetaminophen is to be given every 4th hourly
3) Warm salt water gargles are recommended
4) Prevent dehydration by giving generous amounts of liquids
5) Adequate calorie intake must be maintained
6) Airway obstruction may require management by placing a nasal airway device, using intravenous corticosteroids, and administering humidified oxygen
7) For recurrent tonsillitis, tonsillectomy is advised in children if 5 episodes occur in 2 consecutive years

You need to consult an ENT surgeon for proper clinical examination and presence of any other infections like ear infection which commonly occurs with tonsillitis.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
