Suggest Treatment For Recurrent Sinus Infections

I have frequent sinus infections. My ENT gave me a Rx for Moxifloxacin 400 mg 1x a day to use if I get sick when traveling. I got sick last Monday and used 8 pills--all I had. During the last day or two on the meds, I started to feel sick again. When I stopped the meds, I got really bad--congested, headachy, running nose, low fever (100.1). I have more moxifloxacin--should I resume? Not sure I ll find a doctor around today.

Hi,

As per your complain it seems that there is accumulation of infectious fluid inside your sinuses and along with it there is inflammation of sinuses leading to the symptoms of headache, congestion and fever.

Moxifloxacin can be continued but if it is not working you might need alternate antibiotics for relief. I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like PNS view x ray or MRI scan can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, decongestants like Pseudoephadrine, do saline nasal irrigation, steam inhalation and use a humidifier in your room. You can also be advised decongestant nasal sprays containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline.

Avoid spicy and chilled foods. Do warm compresses around nostrils.

Hope this information helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thanks and regards,
Dr. Honey Nandwani Arora
