My mother has developed UTI. Even after an antibiotic course done thrice , she again develops the same problem as soon as medicine is discontinued. Every time a urine culture is done and antibiotics given according to the sensitive strains. She has burning sensation while urinating. Can you kindly suggest something?

Hi!
Thank you for asking HCM.

I read you question and I understand your concern.

If I were the treating doctor with the recucernt UTI i would do some examination of the urinary tract to see if there is any other urinary tract problem that could cause recureny infection .These conditions are structural abnormalitis such as urinary reflux or kidney stones ( a kidney radiography or Ecography ) Cause these condition may cause often recureny infection.
Also postmenopausal woman are more vulnerable To have recurent infection cause of the hormonal changes , and changes in normal Ph in vagina.

I would give some advice that will help your mother to prevent recurrent infection.:

- have a good hygiene, use cotton underwear, wash from infront to the back after urination or bowel movement.Don't use soap only warm water.
-Empty the blader before intercorse and as soon as possible after it
Use tampons for period .

-Drink a lot of fluid start with 1 glass of water every meal, use cranberry juice it has shown that has good benefit on preventing recurent infection
-Urinate often , don't keep the urine when it's the need to do .
-An estrogen vaginal crem helps in postmenopausal woman
-Sometimes we when the patient has often recurent infection , we prescribe to them antibiotic profylaxi for 6onth or 1 year .or postcoital profylaxi. such as Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole,Fosfomycin or nitrofurantoin.

Hope these help.
If you have any other question please write to me again.I'll be happy to answer .
