Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 89 yr. old mother has rectal burning without diarrhea. The skin around the anus is red, and burns. I have gently washed the area with a clean cloth and applied petroleum jelly, to protect the area. This has been going on for a couple of days, and no relief. I have also given her yogurt and buttermilk to drink. What else can I do?
Hi. Thanks for your query. This is perianal excoriation. You have done a good job of cleaning but clean off the petroleum jelly as it may act as a layer under which secondary infection can grow. She needs antibiotics and probiotics for cure. Apply liquid povidone iodine locally. Consult Gastro surgeon and get Colonoscopy done to rule out cancer.
