Suggest Treatment For Rashes On The Torso

Hi, I have shinges. It started May 1st, exactly 2 weeks ago. I have a rash around my torso starting at my mid back at my shoulder blade and runs all the way to my front mid breast area. I went to the ER on Friday, May 5th, and they gave me 2 prescriptions, one for 12 oxycodone w/ acetaminophen 5mg/325mg, and 7 day dose of Zovirax. After the ER dose of oxycodone ran out on Monday, May 8, my doctor prescribed 12 more, to take 1/2 tablet with Tylenol q 4-6 hours, and 300mg gabapentin: 2 in the am, 1 at noon, and 2 in the pm. I called the doctor this morning because I am still in severe pain, and he will not prescribe anymore oxycodone, said he will get fined $20,000.00 if they prescribe anymore pain meds for me. He increased my gabapentin to 2 (600mg) in the am, 600mg at noon, and 900mg at pm. I am in in pain and the gabapentin does not relieve this pain at this time. Why can t the doctor prescribe medications that will relieve the pain? Is the Stat Board of Pharmacy really limiting patients to maximum of 24 tablets? Should I look for a new doctor?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history of shingles, my treatment advice is -
1. Don't squeeze the lesions as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a soothing lotion like calamine lotion on affected region twice daily.
3. Take an NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen for pain.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics, oral acyclovir taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
