Suggest Treatment For Possible Mite Infestation

Hello. My ex boyfriend is suffering from what appears to be mite infestation. It took me a long time to work rhis out as no doctor seemed to be clear what it was. I read that you need to treat yourself for up to 12 weeks as they keep laying eggs and rehatching. Do you know what is the best treatment for it? He s had this for about 2 years now and when we were together eveey timw we shared a bed, i ended up itching all over and the itching would last up to 3 nights. Would be very grateful for some medixal advise on best treatment. Thank you, linda

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Scabies is a contagious skin infestation by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. The most common symptoms are severe itchiness and a pimple-like rash. Occasionally, tiny burrows may be seen in the skin. Itching symptom is often worse at night.

A number of medications are effective in treating scabies. 'Permethrin' is the most effective treatment for scabies. It is applied from the neck down at bedtime, and left on for about 8 to 14 hours, and then washed off in the morning. Care should be taken to coat the entire skin surface and not just symptomatic areas. One application is normally sufficient, but a second application is recommended 3 to 7 days later as a precaution.

Oral intake of 'ivermectin' is effective in eradicating scabies, often in a single dose. It is the treatment of choice for crusted scabies, and is sometimes prescribed in combination with a topical agent.

Kindly consult Dermatologist for clinical evaluation and appropriate course of treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
